YMCA Newcastle
We celebrated our 170th anniversary in 2019 making us one of the oldest youth work organisations in Newcastle. Today YMCA Newcastle works with children, young people and the community, from all backgrounds regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or culture.
We have a brilliant opportunity for you to join our fantastic Youth Work team!
Our Youth Work team support children and young people aged 10-25 and the wider community. We operate from Walker Park in the community centre in the heart of Walker. predominantly in the Walker and Byker areas of Newcastle, but we also venture further afield. We provide social, emotional and practical support through our day to day work. We deliver a variety of activities, trips and residentials for young people to broaden their horizons and motivate them to reach their goals and aspirations. While the people we work with can be challenging, job satisfaction is incredibly rewarding. We encourage and listen to young people to help shape our services and have a voice.
We support our community development team who deliver activities in the community to address social isolation, including a parent, baby and toddler group and our Young at Heart isolation group.
Our Team
You will be working with our awesome youth workers who are passionate about helping and empowering children and young people to achieve their full potential and we give unconditional support.
We deliver youth and community led services such as centre-based activities at our Walker Park hub, open drop-ins for young people 13-18 years old, a safe space to hang out. We also deliver detached and outreach youth work in the Walker and Byker areas, we are proud to engage with young people on their own turf. We go into local schools to reach out to young people and deliver sexual health and employability support. We deliver regular sports and physical activity sessions and as restrictions ease, we will soon be back to hiking, biking and camping!
It is an exciting time to join our team as we begin to deliver new programmes coming out of the pandemic, these include, developing a programme to explore heritage sites, cycling, app development, trips to the forest, parks, beaches, camping and residentials (restrictions allowing of course!), Trinity College London accredited arts awards, and the Junior Award Scheme for Schools to encourage personal development of young people.
Working Hours
We work to accommodate young people when they are available – which means after school time and we provide additional activities over the school holidays. We also work occasional evenings and weekends.
